Parent and Student Guide to Chromebook and Google Applications

Within each section are written instructions and a “How to” video to help you with your student’s school issued devices.

How to sign in to your student’s Chromebook- click here for the video

  • Turn On the Chromebook with the power button.
    • If it doesn’t power up immediately , then plug into a power source and try again.
  • Connect to Network then press the blue “Next” button.
  • Sign in to your Chromebook
    • Your student’s login is their “firstname.lastname@ccvschools.com”
    • Your student should have received their password from their teacher. If they have not you will need to contact their teacher.
  • Press the blue “next” button and you should be logged in.

How to log into your student’s Gmail

  • Log into the Chromebook using your student’s login and password.
  • Click the Chrome symbol located in the tool bar. It is a red, green, and yellow circle with a blue circle inside it.
  • Type “gmail.com” in the bar at the top of the screen. OR click the “gmail” button in the top right corner. OR click the square “waffle” that is made out of nine circles in the upper right hand corner, then click the blue, red, yellow, and green “M”.

  • Log into the Chromebook using your student’s login and password
  • Click the Chrome symbol located in the tool bar. It is a red, green, and yellow circle with a blue circle inside it.
  • Below are the three ways to join the class as a student.
    • A class link—Your teacher sends your student the link through Gmail
      • Open Gmail, find the link from your student’s teacher, and click on the link.
      • It will ask you to “Join Class?” Click the Green “Join”.
    • A class code—Your teacher sends your student through Gmail or tells you the class code. 
      • Find the class code that your student’s teacher gave to you/them/ emailed and keep it handy.
      • In a new tab, type “classroom.google.com” in the address bar.
      • In the upper right hand corner find and click the “+” button and click “join class”.
      • Where it says “Class Code” type the above class code into that box.
      • Press the blue “join” button in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
    • An email invite—Your teacher sends your student the invite through Gmail.
      • Go to your student’s gmail and look for an email that says “Class Invitation: ‘Class Name'”
      • Find and click the blue “Join” button

  • Log into the Chromebook using your student’s login and password.

  • Below are the ways to join the class as a student.
    • Google Calendar event
      • Find your scheduled meetings in Calendar and quickly join a video meeting.
      • In Google Calendar, click the event you want to join.
      • Click “Join with Google Meet.”
      • In the window that opens, click “Join Now.” 
    • Enter using a code or nickname
      • In a web browser, enter https://meet.google.com.
      • Click “Join or start a meeting”.
      • Enter a meeting code or nickname.
        • The meeting code is the string of letters at the end of the meeting link. You don’t have to enter the hyphens.
        • You can only use meeting nicknames with people in your organization. This feature is currently only available to Google Workspace users.
        • Click “Continue” and then “Join now”.
    • Join the Meet from Gmail
      • Open Gmail.
      • In the bottom left corner, click My meetings  to join a video call that is upcoming on your calendar.
      • Under “My Meetings,” hover over the upcoming meeting you’d like to join and then click “Join.”
        Tips:
        • Only meetings scheduled in Google calendar will show up under “My Meetings.”
        • You can click on any of your upcoming meetings to view the call details or make changes.
        • If your upcoming meeting is not on your calendar, click “Join a meeting”. Enter the meeting code or nickname and then click “Join”.
      • Before you join your first meeting, make sure to allow permissions for your Microphone and Camera. Once you have granted permission,  
      • To turn your microphone on or off, click Microphone Microphone.
      • To turn your camera on or off, click Camera Video call.
      • To enter the call, click “Join now”.
    • Join the meeting from a link URL
      • Click the meeting link sent to you in a chat message or email.
      • Follow the onscreen prompts to join the meeting.
